She did what many are literally frightened of. She started a business out of horror. Christal Vanetten shares her story as she has seen life.
1. How did The Superghoul start?
Christal- The Superghoul started as a simple Instagram name. Being a fan of DC’s Supergirl and also loving horror, it meshed. What I didn’t anticipate was it carrying through into the business that it is now. After making a career transition, time became available and I applied my background in digital marketing to reporting on all things horror including exclusive interviews with creators in the community. I’m all about supporting one another and creating content so this avenue with The Superghoul has been extraordinary for me.
2. What was your family’s reaction?
Christal- My family is generally supportive granted not all of them understand the horror aspect of what I do. It looks like a hobby from an outsider’s view, but my dad definitely has been my #1 fan in all this. He actually plays a big role in me becoming interested in horror.
3. What according to you is your biggest obstacle now?
Christal- Web design. Right now though… I have an amazing designer from Covet Agency working on upgrading the look of my website. I was incredibly stubborn thinking I could figure it out on my own, but sometimes you have to push pride aside to reach goals.
4. What are the pros and cons of being the women in business?
Christal- Many of my colleagues who are women have been met with sexist stereotypes or have had their voice ignored in their fields by both men and women. That’s a huge con and I think with that, the proof it all is having the opportunity to astonish everyone with what you have to bring to the table. A banquet table. Aim to exceed expectations.
5. Where do you see yourself and your business in the next 5 years?
Christal- Traveling and networking with colleagues while continuing to grow! The future is unknown but I’m ready for it.
6. Being the person you are now, what advice would you like to give to your younger self?
Christal- I would tell my younger self to ignore the criticisms. I think Dita Von Teese said it best: “You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be somebody who hates peaches.”
7. What is one life lesson which you have learned through your journey in business?
Christal- Enjoy each moment. Enjoy the process. If it feels like a chore, make changes because this is my passion and it’s mine to carry. I have so much to be grateful for because this is something I’ve wanted to do for years but didn’t start until December 2017. That itself was a lesson in not holding back.
8. Which is your favorite book/books?
Christal- Oh goodness. That’s a tough one. I’d have to say Jane Eyre and Madame Bovary. I’m sure there are more but there are many books to pick from haha.
9. What is your favorite quote?
Christal- Many but as of late, it’s a quote from Vincent Price: “A man who limits his interests, limits his life.”
